This article assumes that you have read the other background articles listed on the index page. Most Motorola radios built since the mid to late s base stations, repeaters, mobiles, portables, and even pagers are synthesized and programmable. This means they don't use individual crystals to determine the transmit and receive frequencies. Also, these and other parameters can be altered without complex and difficult internal component changes.

The Personal Computer PC has become the instrument of choice for programming radio parameters. This article will not initially cover the CPS product because I have never owned or tried to program a radio that used it. Other manufacturers have their own proprietary software and programming interfaces. This article is limited to Motorola products. These systems, frequencies, and operating parameters are often private or business-related and are not currently used in the amateur radio bands.

RSS limits access to many trunking-related fields to authorized personnel service shops and system administrators by using coded System Key files.

Just what kinds of things can be programmed into these radios? Certainly many items are common to all radios: transmit and receive frequencies there could be several depending on the radiocoded squelch PL or DPL for the receiver as well as a similar scheme for the transmitter, transmit time-out limits, squelch settings, minimum volume level, trunking parameters, signaling methods MDC, DTMFetc. Some of these parameters are often grouped together and shared among several different operator-selectable channels; Motorola calls these "modes" and on some radios, one mode can be shared among several channels.

For the most part, modes and channels are synonymous and the names are often used interchangeably. On occasion, a few of these parameters can also be selected separately via the radio's control panel: Multiple PL MPLscanning, zones groups of modes or channelsetc. Some parameters are limited to servicing the radio: output power, deviation, frequency, current limiting, etc. Motorola refers to all of this information, that's unique to each radio, as a "code plug".

This term comes from an earlier period when certain parameters were actually selected by inserting a factory-coded plug into a socket in the radio. The name stuck, even though a lot more information is now included in the code plug. By the way, some literature will spell this as one word: "codeplug". In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission FCC is given the task of regulating radio signals there's probably something similar in your country.

One of their rules and regulations states that the transmitting frequency of a commercial land-mobile radio may not be changeable by the user through a front panel control. This means a two-way radio must be limited in such a way that the operator can only select pre-determined frequencies, such as crystal-controlled channels or some means of external programming.

Most amateur two-way radios ARE frequency-agile and have knobs and controls that let the operator choose any transmit and receive frequency the radio is capable of, rather than the more restrictive method in use by commercial radios.

So what's actually needed to program one of these radios? Obviously you need a radio. You also need a computer IBM-compatible desktop with keyboard and monitor, or a laptop. You need programming software installed or loaded on that computer.

Last but not least, you need to connect the radio and computer together. One or more signals are used by the radio for programming purposes. The information is transferred with one or more serial data lines. This connection is often implemented through specific pins in a microphone or accessory jack on the radio. There's no standard connection; it varies by series. This picture shows the most important interdependencies in a codeplug click to enlarge.

To automatically generate and fill scanlists, a CSV with a specific format is required. The file contains one line for each scanlist, starting with the name of the scanlist and followed by the channel names. For a Roaminglist the same structure is valid, as for a Scanlist. Please note, that roaming is not supported by all devices. To automatically generate and fill Zones, a CSV with a specific format is required.

The file contains one line for each zone, starting with the name of the Zone and followed by the channel names. This can be used as backup, or as a base for codeplug development, to start from. This may also be used to copy channels between different DMR transceivers, which codeplugs are not interchangeable.

Before you start "export channels", you have to open any channel with your CPS! The picture above shows the export of channels from a CPS. The exported channels are written into a edit field in CSV notation first, where you can edit the data before storage. This information is shown in the boxes under "Code Plug information" and can be saved in a text file by clicking the "Save Code Plug Information" button.

You may also define a range in your codeplug within the selected channels will be exported a channel number can be found next to the navigation buttons in your CPS.

With the default setting Exporting zones is shown in the picture below. The operation of exporting zones, scanlists and RXGroups as well, is quite similar to exporting channels, described above. Once the zones, scanlists or RXGroups are written into the edit-field, you can edit the CSV or save the data in a file by clicking "Save as". The generated channels are written into a edit field in CSV notation first, where you can edit the data before storage.

Below is an example, how to generate the European FM repeater channels with its former naming pattern R70, R70x Rx x equals 12,5 kHz offset. The naming pattern for repeater channels now is different, but this example shows how powerful the channel list generator can be used. The callsign "channel name" to be displayed is generated automatically and made by a concatenation of up to 6 input fields. The following functions are available for each of the 6 fields:.

The sample shown here, will generate consecutive channels according to the DMR-Find scheme. Via this Interface you have access to one of the biggest databases on amateur radio voice repeaters. Currently they have more than entries from more than 60 countries in their database. To build the channel-name for the newly generated CSV, two additional functions are provided:.

Please carefully check the input file for inconsistency and doubled entries. Sometimes information e. To edit a bulk of channels in one time, CPSProgrammer does provide bulk edit functions.DOS version. RVNA 04 March Operating Systems: Windows 3.

Doing that will give you a seven digit code and your callsign will be registered in the worldwide DMR database. Next up is to download and install the software. Here you can download the programming software and the USB driver.

I needed the driver to get the programming cable to work, but your mileage may vary. Install the software, launch it, connect the radio to the computer via the cable, and try reading from the radio. Whenever you program a new radio, the first step you should do is to read from it and save a blank copy.

Not only will this give you a backup of your radio file, but working with a copy read from the radio will help eliminate compatibility problems down the line. So read the radio, make a copy, and the edit that copy. Ok, lets get into the meat of things. This makes more sense to me when changing channels. A contact can be the talk group you will be using or it can be an individual callsign.

The channels will be our frequencies we will be using, either analog, or digital, and a Zone is a selection of channels that are grouped together. So when we program our radio for a repeater, there are several talk groups we will be using to link to a reflector, drop a reflector, and talk on a reflector.

Each of these talk group actions will defined as a contact. The talk group is just a code used to interface with a reflector, or can be used to filter out reflector traffic. For example, if a repeater carries two reflectors on a particular time slot, you can switch between the reflectors by just changing the talk group your radio is tuned to. But these steps will work for other networks too. Each of these talk groups will be defined as a contact.

Talk Group 8 on slot one is for the linked repeater system, and remaining series of talk groups are for accessing the various reflectors carried on slot two.Forums New posts Search forums.
